Macon: This is hopefully the last of the very hot days

Last night we had our meal at Ayres Rock in a Real Dinkum Ourback Aussie Pub. We drank our Fosters with crocodiles and Kangaroos watching us and had a Summer Feast which was a lovely meal of goats cheese, vegetables and various dips.

When we started our ride this morning it seemed fairly obvious that all the trucks that had enjoyed the Ascension Day yesterday but had decided that they had better get on the road today. It didn't feel particularly dangerous as there was a reasonable shoulder most of the way. However it was not particularly pleasant and really noisy so we decided to cross to the other side and straight away we were on much smaller roads and a PMU appeared almost immediately where we got an excellent coffee and watched the locals having their morning sociability. As usual we sat outside so we could guard the bikes. After that we had a pleasant trip on quiet roads through maize, lentils, grass, lettuces and a few cattle. The villages are tiny with space services. We came to a couple splitting wood with an old International tractor.

As we approached Macon we had a few navigational problems but finally we got beside the Soane opposite the city and found a seat in the shade to have our lunch of bread, cheese and peaches and the last of the Rose wine. From there we walked across the stone bridge and I went into the information to get maps for our onward journey and got some excellent ones. We are staying at the Hotel Bourgon, the room is air conditioned and I must say we have watched a lot of Olympics. Saw the sad sight of the NZ girl tripping in the 5000m, Lisa Carrington winning gold in the K1, a NZ cyclists win his heat in one of those weird cycling races they have and Bolt easily win his heat in the 200m
