Michigan Brought Her Best Today
Sorry for posting later than usual, but today was a great day and I’m finally done having fun.
Started the day at about 7:30 from Naubinway and road along Lake Michigan for the better part of 46 miles. At times I forgot I was in Michigan and thought I was at the Jersey Shore or the Oregon Coast. There were actual sand dunes, waves, and signs that said “watch for sand on the road”. The only thing missing was the salty ocean smell.
The traffic was lighter today than the recent holiday and weekend traffic and the shoulder was good until it was gone. It just disappeared without warning, but a sidewalk/path emerged. Only one problem, I was doing about 18 mph when I realized the curb was a full on curb versus an entry apron. I almost panicked but PSG stepped up figuratively and literally and hopped the curb. I was better prepared when the path ended and there was no exit apron.
Took a few (read as lots) of pictures of the bridge to Mackinaw City. The bridge reminds me of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel except there are no tunnels and the bridge is way taller and shorter in length. Other than that, the bridges are identical 😜. Seriously if you’ve seen them both you’d understand.
Caught the 11:30 ferry from St Ignace to Mackinaw Island. Took PSG over with me and did two, eight mile loops around the island. It’s beautiful…no other way to describe it. No motorized vehicles on the island. You either walk, ride a bike, or take a horse and buggy. So you end up with lots of horse poop on the road and people who haven’t ridden a bike in years (and it shows) riding bikes. It was a little scary at times, but kudos to them for getting out there.
Lots of pictures to share from the island and of Lake Huron. I did the second loop because I enjoyed the first one so much that I just needed more. Hey Mrs G, maybe when we’re back on the island later this week, we can look for a house 😳. It’s absolutely beautiful and there aren’t a lot of people, no cars or trucks and no trains. Reserve judgement until you see it, ok (just kidding…sorta).
Trivia: So I rode along Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. What are the other Great Lakes? Hint 1: it’s not the Atlantic or the Pacific.
Hint 2: HOMES
Caught the 3:30 ferry over to Mackinaw City and toured the town a bit. Very touristy…like a typical shore (there goes that Jersey in me coming out again) town.
Two riding days left until I roll into Traverse City and see Mrs G. As for tomorrow it’s about 65 miles and I’m looking forward to riding through the Tunnel of Trees.
Until then, enjoy the pictures.
