Ft Lauderdale to Jupiter - Florida Rewired - CycleBlaze

Ft Lauderdale to Jupiter

Another cool morning. Florida should be more reliable! And while the coming days look promising, today, we are starting off in the low 50s. But that was at 9:00 AM, and we were headed to breakfast at Oceans Grille, only 2.7 miles away. It was an excellent breakfast. From there, close to 10:00, we started north on A1A.

Today was not overly special. We were retracing our steps from last year when we did the East Coast tour, so I did not take a lot of pictures. A1A is excellent for biking, and we followed it north, being caught by only one movable (draw) span.

Route A1A over Hillsboro Inlet.

Waiting in the queue.

A fellow cyclist waiting in line as well.

That fellow cyclist was very impressive. He, maybe she (I was never sure because I never caught her/him!), was very strong and was powered strictly by her/his arms. I followed him/her for many miles, sometimes getting close, sometimes drifting further back. The shoulders north of this bridge were in iffy condition, and she/he had no hesitation taking the lane when it made sense as a cyclist. I followed right behind, but I have a higher profile. I have to respect this person a lot!

So we continued north, following the shoreline, which we would occasionally get a glimpse of:

Even in the mid-sixties, people were out on the beach. With windscreens, of course!

And there was wind. All day and mostly from the northwest. So we had some headwind, but we still made good time. At Delray Beach, we left A1A for the mainland, crossing the Intracoastal Waterway on E Atlantic Avenue and following it to Route 1 north, which was not as bad as one might expect.

The part of US 1 we rode was relatively bike-friendly but also well-landscaped.

Unfortunately, we eventually ended up on Military Trail . . . which is NOT a bike trail but a major highway with two and three lanes in each direction. Again, not sure why RWGPS thinks this is good . . . we survived fine, but it wasn't overly pleasurable. And the bike facilities, mostly bike lanes and unmarked narrow shoulders, would come and go. In some places it was better to ride on the sidewalk. And about five miles from our hotel, that option was a nice one.

Well-landscaped sidewalks/bikeways.

Not all perfect, but better than the bike lane.

We arrived around 3:00 or 3:30 PM and felt good. We relaxed and headed out for drinks and dinner at 6:00 or 6:30. Being near the Florida Atlantic University meant we had lots of options!
