St George, NB to St John, NB

Another gorgeous day. Started in the low 60s but warmed up nicely to the low 70s. Perfect cycling weather.

Today's ride to St John

It was also an easy day with few challenges. We only climbed about 2,200 feet, most of which seemed to be early in the day. So the only "challenge" was when we were directed onto the New Brunswick Trail. What we learned in Maine (and points north) is that the trails are not paved. And the NB Trail was not an exception!

Rough riding on the NB Trail.

But there were some nice sections as well.

And great views of a nearby lake.

We were only on the trail for maybe a mile and then back on hard pavement . . . and hills! But not too bad, and we pushed on to a long stretch of flat land that ran for a good distance along the Bay of Fundy.

Happy on the road to happiness.

And the Bay of Fundy.

A more expansive view.

And all the roads were quiet. Even the wide, expansive ones with good shoulders. The stretch along the Bay of Fundy was sweet. Eventually we entered into more protected areas with a variety of viewsheds and forest areas. And the roads got smaller.

There were times we really felt out in the wilderness . . . and big sky country.

But we would then wind onto local roads with great views.

We finally ended back on NB-1, as there were no more local roads that would cross the great marsh: Musquash Marsh.

This marsh was quite impressive. The photo does not do it justice.

Complete with moose crossing signs.

NB-1 took us for about ten miles, but you can't enter St John on it by bicycle, so you must exit and take the local roads, including the somewhat significant crossing over the Reversing Falls. We thought that was an odd name but discovered later that they are so named because they are subject to tidal action (as in "in" and "out") and actually do "reverse."

It was a lousy approach into St John. Minimal accommodations have been made for pedestrians and cyclists. But we survived and finally got on a not-too-bad waterfront trail that led to Water Street and Famous Barbershop, where I decided I needed a haircut!

Later, at dinner, I thought it looked pretty swell. After all, normally it's covered by a helmet.

Afterward, we found a nice hotel, did some wandering about the city, and found dinner at a local pub.

We went a little upscale tonight.
