Sandy Hook
Today was a Sandy Hook day. Reserved to relax a bit and explore a park that I had heard much about but never seen. We started the day taking a leisurely breakfast at Zoe's in Atlantic Highlands.
Next stop, the bicycle shop. All of us had minor this and that's to attend to. Fortunately, there was Atlantic Cyclery nearby. My rear tire was badly worn after 2000 miles carrying me and my gear, so I had it replaced in short order. Jerry had his handlebars re-taped and a screw holding his rack tightened up. Happy had issues with his pedals, but there was no solution to be had (today at least).

The real gem, however, was the route back to Sandy Hook that took us through the highs in Highland.
I love climbing hills, and we really needed some after all the flat riding we had been doing, so it was a very welcome addition to the day's exploration.
After the hills, we had flat riding up the point to Fort Hancock. And the wind was still blowing out of the south, so we made relatively good time (although that was not the goal).
We made straight for Fort Hancock and checked out the lighthouse and the buildings comprising the fort, most of which are in a sad state of repair.

Lastly, we went to Gunnison Beach to catch the sights (raised eyebrow). We went to the right, but my mind was on the left. A half-hour nap in the sun did me good. But we did singe the feetsies on the walk back!

Our ride back had a strong headwind, but that was good practice for us. We went back over the pedestrian bridge and chose the easy route along the waterfront rather than climb more hills.
Today's ride: 28 miles (45 km)
Total: 2,058 miles (3,312 km)
