Rest Day in Charleston

Our day off. And we needed it after 83 miles in the saddle yesterday. And my rule on days off is no cycling! I like to stretch my legs in other ways and enjoy walking, so I found an online walking tour of historic Charleston, and off we went.

We started in Washington Square.

Then the Four Corners of Law (this is one corner, City Hall).

A typical home in the historic district (side entry and porch).

And a home where Washington was entertained while on a tour of the South.

And South Battery mansion (the more tony address).

And lots of gardens.

In the afternoon, we took the ferry and toured Ft Sumter. That was a very moving experience. I was surprised at the impact it had on me. The park ranger giving the tour was also probably one of the best and most well-informed rangers I have encountered.

Ft Sumter as we approached from the sea. It is only one-third its original height; the large black monolith in the center is a bunker added in 1899.

Vintage cannon balls lodged in the walls from various bombardments during the Civil War. Note the tan line at the feet!

On the way back to Charleston, we were treated to a nice view of our route out of town tomorrow over the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, which carries the dreaded US-17 BUT has pedestrian and bicycle facilities due to local activism! Good for them!

The bridge we cross tomorrow leaving town!
