Onley to Berlin

We woke to another beautiful morning made more pleasant with the prediction that the wind would prevail out of the south and southwest. And our travels would be north and northeast. Perfect!

Breakfast at Sage Diner was superb and "healthy" (from a cyclist's perspective). We were fueled. Unfortunately, our Garmin Edge 1000s were not cooperating, and try as we might, we could not get the Route Planning feature to work as desired. So this feature sucks. We did the best we could but realized after a while that Google Maps does a superior job (sad fact) and that we would have to work both devices to reach our destination.

Today's ride to Berlin

Actually, truth be told, I relied exclusively on my Google mapping. The Garmin is fine when you have a desktop/laptop to do your routing, but using the device itself is painful and not worth the effort except for short trips (like less than five miles).

Anyway, I knew my route, so off we went. I have to say today was one of our better rides. Of course, we had the wind, the sun, and blue skies, were well rested (unlike yesterday! — no comment), and were fueled. I loved today because it went through many small towns, spaced between vast agricultural and forest settings, and had nice rolling terrain allowing some hill climbing and coasting.

I'm missing the hill climbing! Flat is nice for newbies, but it also means you pedal constantly. Hills allow you to relax half the time!

OK, now for the scenery! Because that is what today was mostly about!

These poplars caught my eye because the new growth looked like little hats. We have pedaled into spring!

More churches . . .

. . . and run-down buildings that have a certain appeal.

And just nice roads. I mean REAL nice roads. No traffic and great views. Very relaxing. This is Happy looking for a missing bike part . . . in his imagination. But that was OK. It gave us a reason to stop . . .

So after a while of bucolic blissfulness, we approached Wallops Island and started getting buzzed by surveillance aircraft!

Low-flying aircraft with wheels down!

That soon disappeared, and we arrived at State Line Road! Maryland arrival!

State Line Road. Like Virginia, no welcome sign! We are in the North, I guess!

Proof positive.

Once in Maryland, the scenery only got better. And there were road improvements!

Glass bottle "trees" . . .

Rumble strips . . . again! But now we had four feet of travel lane!

And more pretty roads. This one, the result of a missed turn that led to the most delightful part of the ride today.

And of course, more farmland.

And as Happy would say, the road to Halifax . . .

We arrived in Berlin around 4:30, a delightful town that is quaint but not too quaint. Pictures of that tomorrow. We have a short day before arriving in Lewes. We plan to use the shore route . . .

Today's ride: 60 miles (97 km)
Total: 1,797 miles (2,892 km)
