A Ferry Ride: On to Ft Myers

Today was our last day in Key West and checkout day at the Heron House Court. Fortunately, Roman was very agreeable to us storing our gear (bikes, panniers, and camping gear) at the guesthouse until we left for the ferry around 4:00 PM. So after breakfast, we packed and stored our panniers and took a walk around town.

We really had no agenda. So we wandered down to Duval Street (the most popular street in Key West to walk). Mostly we went shop hopping with only minor purchasing goals. A thank-you card for our Warmshowers host. A case for my cracked iPhone (a somewhat belated purchase). And Happy needed something, but I can't remember what! Our success was limited to the thank-you card.

We wandered the length of Duval Street, heading south, and settled on a place to grab lunch before heading back to the Heron House. We had been advised to be at the ferry service, Key West Express, no later than 4:00 PM in order to properly check our bikes (even though the ferry didn't depart until 6:00 PM). So we got back in time to change clothes, load the bikes, and bike the 1-1/2 miles or so to the ferry terminal. And once there, we wait lol, of course.

The ride was uneventful (always a good thing), and we arrived around 9:00 PM. Our Warmshowers host, Jim, was waiting for us with a car and bike rack! After some discussion and false starts, we decided Happy's bike would never go on the rack. But that worked out OK since it folded up relatively easily and went in the back seat next to me. And the panniers and other gear stowed in the trunk easily.
