A Day in Key Largo
Key Largo Kampground is a nice place to stay if you're tent camping for several days although our next door neighbor was up at 3:00 AM smoking (cigarettes!) and brooding over something. Happy woke because he smelled the smoke. I slept through that, but when he started breaking camp around 4:00 AM, I was awake as well. But that can be life in a campground. If you've ever been on an organized tour then you know the zipper alarms start very early as well.
All that activity gave us an excuse to sleep in a bit, but not so late that we missed the free coffee and donuts offered in the community room. There are a lot of all-season residents in the more permanent RV part of the camp, and they all knew each other. So we felt a tad out of place, but that was OK. We got our fill of coffee and moved on.
We had planned to go snorkeling at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and were lucky enough to get a reservation for the 3:00 PM excursion the day before. So we puttered around camp that morning and planned to bike the one mile or so to the park, grabbing lunch along the way.
We were advised to be at the park by 1:30, which seemed awfully early, but without other plans, we headed out about noon to grab lunch at The Fish House and then bike to the park. Being in the Keys, I was determined to expand my fish diet and ordered a yellowtail snapper sandwich. It was quite good.
The snorkeling trip was a lot of fun. This particular excursion went about three or four miles out to the main barrier reef, and we had a good dive. And found Jesus to boot.
