Day 4: Getting in the Groove

Day 4: Friday, 13 May 1983

Start: Blue Dolphin campground, Corinth, Greece

End: Campground, Akranthos, Greece

Up around 7:00. Light breakfast at Blue Dolphin campground with Gary and Steve. Still learning most efficient techniques to pack and get rolling. Didn't manage to pull out until 10:30. Flat terrain. Considerably warmer. Groves of luscious lemon trees and succession of small towns lining the road.

Still off-season here, but the coast is gearing up for tourists. Kids shout "Hello" as we pass, but in places where we stop, most people regard us with indifference, looking away if we try to engage them. Two or three camps of gypsies in dry river beds along the way. Everything closes down and shuts up tight at mid-day.

Tonight's campground not as nice as the Blue Dolphin, but still entirely suitable. We pulled in around 5:00 after an easy day. Waded in the Gulf. Showered. Pedaled back into town for dinner.

Mike and I still adjusting to each other, both in riding style and how we approach the world around us. He seems very uncertain about riding without phoning ahead. I'm always in favor of just riding and it will work out. Tomorrow, we agree, we need to hit the road earlier and make some good miles before it gets too hot.

Gorgeous sunset.
