Day 25: Eurovelo 15 - the Rhine river (source to sea)
The North Sea & the end
I woke up at the camping ground, fully aware that today marks the culmination of my ride from Oberalppass in Switzerland, including the trek to Lake Toma - the source of the Rhine - to the North Sea at Hook of Holland. It would be a quick ride, just 3 km to the pier, before I continue my journey toward Amsterdam in preparation for my flight home.
However, I’ve planned too well. I set aside a contingency of seven additional days for this trip to account for any mechanical issues or health setbacks. If I hadn’t built in that buffer and encountered any problems, my only option would have been to catch a train on some days. For me, that was never an option, as I wanted to ride every single kilometre of the Rhine. The downside now is that I can’t secure an earlier flight home - all flights are completely full, with demand far exceeding supply. I’ve even tried looking for flights from Frankfurt, London, and Paris, but no luck there either.
At 8:00 am, I cycled down to the pier at Hook of Holland, where I poured the water that I collected from Lake Toma, into the mouth of the Rhine as it meets the North Sea.
My goal of cycling the Rhine River, from source to sea, was complete. I had mixed feelings – exhilaration and a wonderful sense of accomplishment, yet also a profound disquiet, bordering on sadness, that my journey was over. One thing I did know was that this would not be my last multi-day, long distance cycling trip exploring the world.
Importantly, on this trip, people have generously donated over $6,000 to Blue Dragon through my charity page, plus other private donations directly to the Foundation. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed, supported, and encouraged me throughout this trip. Your support has been invaluable.
If you wish to donate to Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation or know more about its work, please visit their website directly.
Once again, thank you all!
