A visit to Vimy Ridge

While a bit large for negotiating French streets and parking spaces, our van was great for carrying bikes. We just hooked the handlebars over the back seat, tossed in paniers, and headed off to Arras. While the history of this area goes back over centuries, the impacts of WWI are highlighted at every turn. Vimy is a stunning memorial to the Canadians who lost their lives there in 1917. Among them was Rod's great uncle, Roderick Bird, who died on Vimy Ridge, three days after his arrival. He was only 17. It was a deeply touching moment to find his gravestone in a small but beautifully cared for cemetery tucked between farmers' fields in the plain below Vimy Ridge.

Easy way to carry and access bikes

Rod left a picture of Roderick Bird at his headstone - such a tragic loss of a young life.
