Donaueschingen

One broken cable

Since Ron and Carol didn’t make it to Donaueschingen until today Patti and I had a free day to wander about.  It rained through the night and today it is rather cool so a good day to wander and recover from jet lag.  The first thing we did was suss out a bike shop to pump up our tires since yesterday we ran across the grumpiest and most unfriendly bike shop owner I have ever encountered.  He did not want our bikes in his store and would not give us air unless we paid 10€, so needless to say we left.  We rode the bikes back to the hotel which was a good thing because Patti snapped a cable so she was back to the shop for a repair.  That is the second misadventure of the trip so I wonder what number three will be.  After all of that we found what traditionally, since Roman times, has been declared the source of the river.  There is some debate about the actual source but this is good enough for us.  We also found the start of the trail so there should be no confusion getting out of town.  Ron and Carol arrived on time and we met them at the train station.  After a celebratory glass of bubbles, a shower and dinner we all hit the rack since tomorrow we start riding,

Stopped at this local market to buy some fruit.

Steve Miller/GrampiesSo weird, it looks like a nice shop. But I am curious - in deciding not to have a bike pump (ok, and patches and levers) are you not risking a long walk on some forlorn road or path with a flat? Admittedly, unlike in gritty North America we have had no flats with our bikes in Germany/Austria/Czech in recent years!

Yvonne McLeanGlad you're all there now. Hope the weather gets better for you. I don't think you can get lost as the route follows the river, at least from Passau to Vienna. I did it with Swiss relatives in 2006.....I kept stopping to take photos but they didn't. I wonder why!! Have fun.
