A day in Nice

A tourist day before the ferry to Corsica

Wow!  What a good sleep. Perhaps the best ever after arriving in Europe. I guess the secret to my success is a bunch of sleepless nights before departing, trying to decide if I should try to ride a bike.

We  had a slow morning. Normally this time would be occupied by putting my bike back together. Instead, the bike is in pieces in Canmore. And we had until the noon checkout time to do some planning. The weather forecast is looking great, so we can be confident in our route.

It was tough to find a boulangerie in airport hotel land. The place nearest us was a bagel shop, but it has no bagels until 11 am. So we walked to a sketchy nearby neighborhood, where a fellow warned Mel to be careful of her purse.

At noon, we left our bags at the hotel and took the tram into the centre of Nice to walk around -  we went up to get a view. There were lovely gardens and an interesting Jewish cemetery with a memorial wall with names, ages, and towns of Nazi victims.

We had an outdoor lunch - mine was a Niçoise salad. Mel had moules & frites. The salad was good, but not what it could be when local tomatoes are ripe.

Beautiful Nice gardens.

We took the tram back to our hotel for a quick break and to pick up our luggage to head to dinner and the ferry. Mel rode to the port, and I took a busy tram - it was standing room only to start.

It was a beautiful evening - we sat outdoors and ate very good pizza before walking down to the port. And I drank my first Aperol spritz of 2025. Never disappoints.

We boarded the ferry as pedestrians. Mel had to strip off her nine (!) bikepacking bags to put them through the security X-ray. I’m not sure what they were looking for. Weapons, I guess. Knives are certainly allowed because mine made it through. We had loads of time, so there was no stress of missing the boat.

Pedestrian boarding area on the ferry. I waited here for Mel to secure her bike with the motorbikes.

The light was beautiful as we left Nice.

Our comfortable and clean berth.

We stood on deck until we cleared the harbour, then descended to the depths of our windowless but very comfortable berth. Mel let the purser know that our soap dispensers were both empty. He came quickly, but it turned out that the dispensers both leaked out all the soap pretty much instantly. Oops.

Mel’s bike route.
