Lockdown Day 31 - Decoding Zero Social Covid

The goalposts keep changing for what this "zero social covid" or "dynamic zero" or whatever they call it means.  After sifting through various sources and talking to people I've finally come to an understanding.  It is a term lost in it's own mistranslation, but broadly speaking it means:  no new covid cases found in community transmission with unknown sources.  That is, any new case can be 'caught in quarantine' and traced back to links with other such cases.

Typical reports for the last 3 weeks would say something like these graphics I've been posting on occasion

Central qurantine means the infamous 'quarantine camps' as well as buildings or compounds in locked-down status.  I literally just figured this out now.  Apparently the expat author of these daily case reports did as well.  He apologized today after an uproar of criticism from the expat community and said "Sorry for the confusion, I just knew the definition of SOCIETY".  And guess what?  We aren't part of society!

Allow me to explain.  For two days in a row now the government sources suddenly announced with great jubilation that they had achieved zero social covid!   But the entire expat community didn't believe a word of it because they had recent confirmed cases in their compounds the same day -- including my own.

As it turns out Shanghai had been classifying compounds into three risk areas all last  month

  • Locked down areas, those with confirmed cases in the compound within the last 7 days (ours)
  • Control areas, 7 days passed since the last confirmed case
  • Precautionary areas, 14 days passed since last confirmed case

As it turns out the authorities were including locked down and control areas all along as "central quarantine".  This means that only precautionary areas would count as being in society.  Since there are so few of these areas, no wonder the government could claim this zero covid or whatever.

I then went to Wikipedia to compare and contrast a lockdown and a quarantine

The medical distinction between a lockdown order and a quarantine is that a quarantine is usually understood to involve isolating only selected people who are considered to be possibly infectious rather than the entire population of an area.

What's happening here in China is really not much different from what Vladimir Putin is doing with Ukraine and how he plans to make some victory announcement on May 9 to give the appearance that his war is going to plan.
