Taking on the hills: Wee Jasper to Tumut

About 40km of today’s ride was uphill on dirt roads. The final 20km was a magnificent downhill roll on seal. Like yesterday there were very few other vehicles sharing the road. Although physically hard, it was an enjoyable ride through forest and rural hill country. Cool morning. Hot afternoon.
Will managed the hard ride well but was obviously not feeling the best. The heat and the hills were taking a toll, and the failure of his panniers and stove exacerbated the difficulties. He was considering not continuing to ride. A sound consideration given that the next days were going to be hard.

The day in pics looked like this:

Dawn at Billy Grace Reserve camp with a chorus of bird calls as the morning wake up call. No need for an alarm clock.

The road surface varied from loose gravel to corrugated to smooth dirt for about 40km. That’s Will leading the charge up the hill.

Violent storms rolled over town throughout the night. I was pleased to be under a roof and not camped. Photo taken from the cabin verandah.
