Day 203-204: Kibale - Bike Bimble - CycleBlaze

Day 203-204: Kibale

Nothing much to report from Kibale. There’s no real reason to stay in this town unless you are planning to visit the nearby Impenetrable Forest to track down some Gorillas. We probably should have stayed in a campground or small hotel on the Lake Bunyanyi, a 20km long, picturesque lake only 6km west of the town. That is 6km as the crow flies up and over a 600m high range.

I (Stephen) did go for a ride to have a look. Before really climbing I’d been stopped by a small group who claimed the road I’d picked was ‘too far, too far’ and I should follow the motorcyclist who would show me a short cut. In the end I convinced him that I was ok, 20km wasn’t to far, it’d be alright. What I’d mistaken for interest in my wellbeing was finally demonstrated to be yet another way to try to get the walking bag of cash to pay for some local knowledge. It didn’t work. It’s wearing a bit thin.

Riding off the main road for a short while showed an even less well-off population than the rest of Uganda. The few I talked to couldn’t understand that I was just out to have a look and didn’t want to take a boat (that went no-where I wanted to go).

The lake is quite pretty though. Steep hills with water between and a few steep islands. Very, very green (and blue). The map showed large chunks of what should have been forest. It’d been raised and replaced by crops.

The main reason for us to spend more than a few minutes in Kibale was to slow down slightly and not get to Kigali (and the airport) too early. We could have made a longer tour in Rwanda – or we could rest up for a day or two because we’ll need to get going again soon in Greece.
