I arrived in Aktau at 3 am, and surprisingly, so did my bike and luggage. Situated on the eastern shores of the Caspian Sea, it is a remote place, to say the least. To its east lies the Mangystau desert, into which I will ride tomorrow morning. I treated myself to a luxurious stay at the Dostyk Hotel. I spent the day banking sleep, assembling my bike, eating, doing a little shopping and going for a bland walk around town and down to the coast of the Caspian Sea. Aktau is bleak under a grey sky, and resonates the Soviet history that it was once part of. It's streets are wide and it's buildings are immense and tired. People do smile, and are friendly when spoken to. Kazakhstan is so different to any other place I have visited, and I am uncertain of what lies ahead, but eager to get going. I hope the wind abates and changes direction by tomorrow morning.
