21May2025

After my usual early breakfast of fruit, nuts, overnight oats and coffee, I set off on the main roads out of Gulistan and followed the signs to Tashkent. I was feeling good on the bike, and was pleased that I had managed to ride well within myself the last two days in preparation for one last long day to the capital city of Uzbekistan. It was warmer than usual today, at around 37 degrees, and I got through a lot of water. Thankfully "mini markets" are plentiful, as is water as a result! The road surface was mixed, but improved the closer I got to my destination. Lorries were plentiful today, especially with the proximity to the Kazakh border, but didn't pose any real threat to me despite being slightly incompetent at times. I came across 2 cycling couples going the opposite direction, but only managed waves of recognition because the hard shoulder divided the busy motorway effectively, and kept us apart. It is always heart warming too see others on two wheels. I arrived in Tashkent by 13:00 just as it was getting too hot to ride much further. I decided to stay in the quiet suburbs so that I have an easy and quick escape on the day I leave. Tomorrow I will explore what UZbekistan's capital city has to offer, and also have a much needed rest.
