Klausdorf - Stralsund: We see the new Stralsund

We reached Stralsund on small country roads with a dramatic sky urging us to hurry. It looked like rain but we managed to stay dry for the short distance we had to ride.

I had been looking forward to Stralsund for quite some time. I was in Stralsund shortly after the wall came down, in 1990, and although the city was then in a state of decay I saw that it must have been beautiful at one time and would be once again if the old houses were restored.

Entering Stralsund we pass through a restored city gate.

We arrived in the morning and the tourist office was efficient in finding us a lovely hotel, Pension am Oceaneum, near the harbor for 60 € including breakfast. With that taken care of, we could spend the rest of the day discovering Stralsund.

The city had had been part of the Hanseatic League and its wealth as a major center of trade left if with a rich architectural heritage of brick gothic buildings. Probably, the most distinctive building is the 13th century Town Hall which stands on the Main Square/Alter Markt. There were plenty of interesting streets and renovated historical buildings to explore on the one and a half days that we spent there - preferably on foot since the cobblestones here were of the best quality and guaranteed to loosen or remove every single screw on your bike.

After our stay in Stralsund, we weren't sure how we wanted to continue. We had read that the next 14 kilometers on the Baltic Cycle Route were going to be on a cobblestone road - and that's a long distance if you're riding on cobblestones. Should we head for Berlin instead? Or take the train?

Today's ride: 15 km (9 miles)
Total: 1,480 km (919 miles)

Scott AndersonWhat an amazing place. Europe is so rich - I’ve never even heard of Stralsund before.
