Another Few Days in Ravenna

Ravenna has many great mosaic shops, workshops and schools. We enjoyed the unique quality of the work at this shop near Basilica di San Vitale.

Being cat lovers, we were drawn in to this mosaic shop to check her out.

This dog, when standing, was about 4 feet tall. Watching him turn his head to look at me, the drool flew. He loved his masters - a gentle giant.

Ravenna's charming streets have an untouched beauty that gives you a taste of the past.

We went for a walk out of the town centre and found this great spot for lunch. Rosticceria del Borgo is a mom and son operation with reasonably priced home made pastas, entres and salads.

Our lunch - cappelletti stuffed with herbs & cheese topped with burro salvia (butter sage) sauce - tortelli stuffed with parmesan cheese topped with meat sauce. So simple and so good.

The mosaic shop we visited earlier creates these signs as well as street signs which are used throughout the city.

A deluxe and comfortable child's seat.

On our way to visit another church, we passed by this sewing shop. While we waited, she altered my pink top and got a new top too.

In a bike friendly town like Ravenna, it makes sense that the police ride bicycles too.

The policewoman saw us watching them and misunderstood our interest. She told me to come to her and then instructed Barry to take our picture. Why not?

This little guy isn't walking yet and looks very comfortable on his mom's bike. He is so tiny that his feet don't reach the foot saddles yet.

It's hard to believe from this photo, but cars use this street as well.

We saw this photo outside of a bar in Ravenna.

This shop took us by surprise. What an amazing selection of scotch and fine spirits were in this wee shop.

This beautiful cat walked with determination across a busy street - clearly he has done it before.

We were curious about the neighbourhood church beside our hotel but it was always locked. This day it was open for a festival so we wandered in.

As part of the festival, there was an amazing and detailed feature set up.

A close up of the historic display in the church.

We have seen painted pews in churches in this area. It is a less expensive way to create artistic detail, rather than carved detail in the wood.

Charmaine RuppoltInteresting! I've never seen painted church pews!

A typical street scene - an Italian man with his bike enjoying a coffee at a street cafe.

Ideally the white section is for bicycles. We learned, that as a pedestrian, you must keep your wits about you.

Two months of wearing a bike helmet, camping and travelling without a haircut is just too long. We took a chance on this salon and we made a good choice. Another client who spoke English translated to the stylist what I wanted her to do - "short please".

Barry started with a beard trim and this lead to a haircut.

A great haircut - thanks!

Looking good Barry.

In most towns we have visited in Italy, we have seen statues of Garibaldi, Mazzini, Cavour and Emmanuel II with streets or squares named after them.Guiseppe Garibaldi was a military leader and politician who fought in military campaigns which lead to a unified Italy. He and the others are considered to be the "fathers of the fatherland".

Bikes are the preferred way to get around in Ravenna. Kids are comfortable from an early age on bikes.

This mosaic decorated bike caught out eye on the street.

Charmaine RuppoltWhat a neat idea to put mosaic designs on a bike!
