The Route - Bad Tans and Beautiful Legs: Summer on the TransAmerica Trail - CycleBlaze

The Route

The TransAmerica Trail was the first official coast-to-coast bike route. It was established in 1976 as part of "Bikecentennial," a huge trip in which over 4,000 folks crossed the country to celebrate the country's bicentennial birthday. This initial celebration has since morphed into what is now the Adventure Cycling Association (hereby referred to as ACA), an awesome nonprofit organization that encourages bike travel. This year marks the 40th anniversary since the trail was established and, as such, thousands of people are expected to ride the route (I guess I'm not that original after all). Check out this short clip to see just why this is going to be such an awesome trip:

The word "trail" is, as you'll see, a bit misleading. The TransAm utilizes a variety of existing bike paths, secondary roads, and optional forest service roads that all stray away from high-traffic areas. The ACA sells maps that cover this route, along with 45003 miles of other trails all across the US and Canada. They're a pretty great organization, I gotta say.

An overview of the aptly-named TransAmerica Trail, complete with major cities along the route.
