The First Small Step

By Which a Journey Starts

Summer is drawing to its weary end, and with the advent of minimums below 20C and maximums rarely above 35C, we started to think about riding.

I'd already ridden the 500-odd km between here and the beginning of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail where we plan to start the 'real' ride, but Roger hadn't and was beginning to feel the need to fill the gap. In order to accommodate this wish we planned to nibble away at the missing link with day rides squeezed in whenever life and the weather would allow, and this weekend was the first such opportunity.

The early morning was bearable before the heat kicked in. This was my favourite mailbox on this stretch of road.

Sand and corrugations forced us to walk small sections of Oberina Road. Other than that it was quiet and beautiful, with the occasional cattle grid to shake things up a bit.

The day got worse. I tried slogging into the wind and dust but soon gave up. I've ridden this road in much nicer weather and I think I'll just remember it that way.
