Day 35 - Come Thou Fount
“And the Lord will be king over all the earth. On that day the Lord will be one and his name one.” Zechariah 14:9
Another hard, long day. We woke up after getting not much sleep again. Got going and had pavement for about 30 miles. It was incredible. So easy and we could actually move! Once the gravel started, it was bad. We were next to a river and so many rocks were on the road. It was brutal. Our bodies were aching. Also I forgot to mention, yesterday we made it to the Arctic Circle! We started a couple climbs as we had the final mountain range of the trip to cross. Got to the most northern spruce tree. And then began the climb. It was brutal bouncing in the rocks. I was not having a very fun time. We got up the steep part but had a while to go. Wind started to pick up too. It was beautiful though! We began the second part after I got a quick reset. It was long, steep, and rough with rocks. I kept wanting to stop but made it the whole way. I’ve been really pleased with just how fit I am. We got up and met Steve and Kara who took some pictures of us in the way up and us bungeed on the way down. And got some cheese lol. It started to thunder so we figured it best to get down. It rained on us while we descended. It’s scary to not have any brakes and have dad braking for you. It was completely out of my control! We made it down with a light drizzle. Got some lunch as a quick reset and saw Jeff and Vern again! We met them earlier this morning at a restaurant area. They chatted for a bit then drove off. We packed up and got going. Right as a storm rolled in. And the wind picked up. The rain was cold. I was frustrated. Just bouncing around constantly losing speed. Really not having a great time out there. We were riding through puddles on the road as thunder and lightning were all around. I asked dad if this was safe. I was ready to pull over but knew we had to get through it. Finally, mile by mile we clipped them off. We got to the turnoff and went back about 4 miles to a campsite on the north slope looking back at the brooks range. So awesome. Got everything ready and at that point it stopped raining and the sun started to come out! Had a nice dinner down by a river and went to bed for another short night of sleep. It’s really hard to be just 140 miles out and still have no idea if we’ll get there tomorrow. It’s all so questionable. Very nervous.
Today's ride: 101 miles (163 km)
Total: 4,764 miles (7,667 km)
