Sittard, Maastricht

Sunday

The Hotel Roermond had a hearty breakfast. Ashley and I decided on a deviation from the Maas Route. Because of the elongated mileage of the scenic route, Ashley would not be able to make the train connection to whisk him home in time. We decided to ride the Maas Route for a few miles and detour to Sittard for a train that would get Ash home at an appropriate hour.

We had some country riding, then had some urban/suburban riding into Sittard, where I said my goodbyes to Ashley. He seriously considered another day of riding but the life of a freelancer wouldn't allow it.  We had a great time riding together. The distance was more than I usually map out, but the company and conversation was worth the added effort. Ash comes from the road riding school of bicycling and I am more the party pace. I definitely slowed him down, but he may have enjoyed the wildflowers more at this slower pace.

After leaving Ash in Sittard, I made a bee line for Maastricht. I passed an airport and rode downhill to the outskirts of the city. Through booking.com, I secured a room at the Mabi City Centre Hotel near the heart of things. After some cajoling, they let me keep my bike in the modernist room. I promised not to skuff the walls. It was a nice, warm, spring Sunday and Maastricht was mobbed. Unlike much of the Netherlands, they allow Sunday shopping. The city is a beautiful university town with the Maas River running through the middle. I took a rest day on Monday and walked around, checking out the city. The museums were closed and the doves woke me up in the morning, but all sorts of things were happening.
