Namur
Wednesday
As Olivier had instructed, I helped myself to coffee and muesli, stashed the key, packed the bike and pulled the self-locking door behind me. I'd tweaked my left leg in the fall but it felt all right when I pedaled. The EV 19 joined the EV 3 in Liege and they both followed the Meuse towards Namur. The EuroVelo 3 is known as the Pilgrims Route and eventually works its way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. I would be following it till Paris.
Leaving Liege, I had about 20 kilometers of industry and the river landscape lost its flatness.
The industry lightened up near Huy (pronounced wee). Huy is a scenic town with a gondola passing overhead and an impressive church. I stepped into the church to celebrate my joining the Pilgrim's Route.
Huy definitely could have used more exploring but I wanted to get to Namur. I had a conversation with a fellow bike tourer named Dirk who was also headed to Namur. I asked if he had booked a room near the train station. Dirk said his room was near the river. That made more sense, closer to the trail. I booked a room at the Royal Snail via booking.com. I had a beautiful room on the river for a fair price. Looming over Namur is the Citadel, a medieval fortress. It was a short walk and a great hike up multiple staircases in and around the Citadel.
Exploring the Citadel was great fun. The views of the city from the Citadel were outstanding. After exploring the fortress I went back to the Royal Snail for dinner. This was one of my better decisions. I chose the chefs choice, it was excellent, right up there with the Dutch chocolate milk.
I am a big fan of Namur.
Today's ride: 46 miles (74 km)
Total: 356 miles (573 km)
