The day broke cool and gray with hills and rollers out of Fourmies, then farmland and ranches. It was 60 km to Guise. Guise had a cool fort from the Middle Ages and Familistere, a Utopian worker house/working complex with a dissertation's worth of information. Both the apartment complex and the fort had English translations.

No hotels showed up for 20 kilometers so I stayed in Guise. I rode to the Hotel Guise in town and got a much better rate than on booking.com. A solid one star. I sat for dinner in the tiny restaurant, Le Palais. The proprietor would not let me sit at one of the better tables. As I waited for my dinner, his Saturday night regulars arrived and claimed their usual tables.
