Fourmies, France
Friday
After breakfast with a pleasant couple in the B&B, I headed back to Thuin. I pushed Betsy up a 'suspended garden' path toward the top of hilltop Thuin.
I picked up some cheese, fruit, dried sausage and bread at the Thuin street market. A sunny, cool day, I followed the Sambre into Maubeuge and France. I wanted to check out the interior of the Salle Sthrau, a refurbished church turned into a concert hall. I couldn’t get in. Instead I took a photo of a Brutalist church designed by Andre Lucat, a communist.
The ride out of Maubeuge was hilly until I hit about 30 km of rail trail through forest and farmland. On the forest rail trail, I saw two big hawks, dozens of ducks and ducklings, a small deer and cows.
The trail ran out in Glageon and the hills started again. I used Booking.com to nab a room at the Ibis outside Fourmies, which was situated in a park. I had a duck dinner in the nearby restaurant.
Today's ride: 54 miles (87 km)
Total: 456 miles (734 km)
