Meissen

I would have been happy to stay lying on my warm bed eating chocolate and drinking Pino Grigio but Ken insisted we should go out. I had been out earlier looking fruitlessly for an internet connection. They seem very rare in East Germany. He had bought an umbrella as well as the chocolate and the Pino Grigio . I am glad I went. Meissen is a stunning town with a history dating back thousands of years. Coming in we approached it from the north bank of the Elbe and the view of the Albrechtsburg Castle and the Meissen Cathedral on the hill above the town are spectacular. In the old town where we are staying the narrow streets and old buildings have a charm that always appeals to someone from a country as young as ours. The Markt is the jewel in the centre and it was here we ate. It was the Winzerkeller Restaurant we chose. There was a large family group celebrating something very important. Ken had Bishop Beno's Lentil and Bloodsausage stew and again my choice somewhat more conservative,

Then back to bed the rest of the Pino Grigio was calling but we had finished the chocolate

The most North Easterly grapes in Europe - so we are told
