Day 39 - Belluno to Pieve di Cadore

Heavily back loaded!

A very quick post so I don’t fall several days behind again.

Another great day. Fantastic weather - aided by a good tailwind all day. Beautiful mountains all day long, and a relatively easy ride …. Until the last few km’s.

Then it was straight up. RWGPS had a max incline of just shy of 25% - those would be the insane and quite long streets leading up to the upper reaches of Pieve di Cadore! But we made it!

I’ll also give a final shout out to the wonderful Agriturismo we stayed at. When we booked everything a few months ago both K and I had this romanticized image of these quaint farms in stunning locales with fantastic meals and animals around.

Antico Fienile hit all those marks dead on, and we got our Lab fix with the amazingly friendly Memo too.

We’ve also been obsessed with the weather forecasts over the last few days. Today was the day when would start to get into the real mountains for good, and much higher elevations. Unfortunately the weather forecasts have been showing rain and single digit temperatures to coincide with this and we’ve been considering alternatives. However today turned out much better than the forecast, as have the last few days. Fingers crossed that this trend continues!

This is also the ‘sort of’ start of the Messnerizing part of our tour. The famous mountaineer Rheinhold Messner, who hails from near Brixen in the South Tyrol, has established a series of six mountain museums through the Dolomites and South Tyrol. We thought it would be an interesting theme and tour itinerary to hit them all. That’s one reason we’re in Pieve di Cadore tonight. The first museum we were going to go to is just a little west of here, but unfortunately it does not open until 1 June … and we can’t wait that long … and it also indicates that we’re pushing the seasonal envelope a little in the high alpine terrain we’re about to enter. We’re hopeful though that we’ll be able to get to the remaining five museums over the next two weeks.

Stay tuned for that!

…and here comes Memo to say hello. This super friendly boy can open up the doors (latch type handles) to let himself out, and into his house. He must have heard me outside early in the morning and he came to pay me a visit. So kind Memo! (Pronounce Mee-mo)

We didn’t get a chance to check out Belluno, but it looks like a place we might come back to.

At Belluno we joined into the Munich to Venice bike route, a great combination of separate bike paths and quiet sections of the SS51 as we worked our way up the Piave river valley

We had about 450 m of net elevation to gain today over ~50 km’s. It was very back loaded! Great bike trail too although we really didn’t need it today!

More of the great bike trail. Stunning terrain!

Looking back down the valley towards Belluno. Only a few km’s to go and starting to climb. Just about all the elevation gain came in the last 7 km’s, with the last two up to where our apartment was in the 15% plus range. No pics of this, it was just ‘put in first and grind away’

SOTD

We’ve been waiting over 24 hours to publish this post but have been fretting over SOTD. Finally, over dinner K said “you’ve just got to move on”

And that was it!

Get A Move On, by Mr Scruff

And now this!!!!

This is a GREAT video but it won’t play though this website. Hit the “Watch on YouTube” to get the full experience.

I guess some things are just jinxed :0

…but we did it! And no rain despite the forecast. Have to say we had a good tailwind all day today too. Good night from Pieve di Cadore!
