Day 25 - In Trieste

Dog Days

The weather forecast for today called for heavy rain starting around 10 am. With that potential to deal with, we had pretty modest plans for the day; sleep in, grab a light breakfast, catch up on the journal and if the weather permits, go for a wander in Trieste.

That plan worked, and although it threatened to rain, we really didn’t get much until 7 pm, just when we were heading out  for dinner.

So, in summary another classic ‘down day’ for us. Here’s a few pic’s to guide you through the day.

We’re headed north to Cividale del Friuli tomorrow and then into Slovenia for the next week. Although we’ve technically been in Slovenia twice (2017 and yesterday) the total time we’ve spent there is less than 4 hours so I don’t think that counts. So we’re looking at next week as an entirely new country for us, something we haven’t had for quite some time.

A humbling start to the day. Stumble stones across the street from our apartment. Four elderly people and a 12 year old child. Auschwitz.

Steve Miller/GrampiesDodie always wanted to have some put up in Berlin at her Dad's family's last known residence but never seemed to get through the paperwork. It is so distressing to come across these. Evidence of the cruelty people can inflict on their fellow humans.

Lyle McLeodTo Steve Miller/GrampiesSo true. That’s why we really liked running into the puppy about 30 seconds later. Good reset of our frame of mind

On to the Cattedrale di San Giusto Martire

Ravenna flashback - very nice mosaics. I liked the dim lighting but there was the option to drop a Euro in a coin box to turn on some lights.

The usual, K’s been waiting a bit while I indulged myself.

Second pooch of the day. There seem to be a lot of dachshunds in Italy

SOTD

In addition to great food, service and decor, El Cassettin also has a great soundtrack going. It was mostly blues and heavy on BB King, including this classic:

The Thrill is Gone

This song was our SOTD on the fateful day in Novi Sad during our 2017 tour when K awoke in the morning and said ‘I’m not feeling it anymore. The thrill is gone.’

That prompted a complete change in our plan and we turned west and started cycling, eventually riding through Trieste and on to the CAAR route. Best decision of that trip, and here we find ourselves again, listening to BB, reliving old memories and looking for new adventures.

Good night from Trieste - back in the saddle tomorrow

Steve Miller/GrampiesHi time travellers. Yesterday's entry was dated May 4, and today is dated May 12!! Did you lose track of the days, or the time, or are you currently in an alternate universe/time zone???

Lyle McLeodTo Steve Miller/GrampiesWe’ve been found out! Yes it’s true that I often don’t know what day it is. Thanks for pointing out our time travel. I’ll chalk it up to fat fingers (12 is right below 5 on the tiny iPhone calendar). On the 12th we’re going to be at our friend Borut’s place in Preddvor Slovenia!
