Day 21 - In Cres

And on the 21st day we rested

I know it doesn’t have the same biblical impact as the seventh day, but today - 1 May - is Labour Day in Europe, and that means that most people do absolutely no labour.

We thought we’d try going local, so that’s what we did.

Basically nothing, and it was just fine.

Had a nice sleep in, relative to yesterday, and then a very nice breakfast on the patio of Villa Orhidja (great place). That set us up for a nice short walk to see the local sites … rocks and olive trees, and then a hard afternoon of people watching by the harbour.

We take our rest days seriously.

We did do a little rejigging of our plans for the next couple of weeks, mainly tweaking things (like getting a ferry for the last 8 km into Trieste to avoid the refineries and other industrial stuff) and figuring out our get away strategy for tomorrow. Cres is the last island of this tour and tomorrow will be the last ‘critical ferry’ we have to plan for. We’ve got a 24 km run with 400+m of climbing to do to get to it. Miss the planned one and we’re sitting on our hands for a few hours!

We’ll see what happens tomorrow.

Rocks and Olive trees. Welcome to Cres

We saw that all of the olive trees were surrounded by stone walls / fences. Sometimes there were 3 trees, other times 4, 5 or 6. There was no discernible pattern. This raised a ‘chicken or the egg question’ for us. Were the stone walls demarcating ‘ownership’ or were they there as a result of making the space for the trees?

All the walls were mostly single layer vertical dry pack. Quite amazing that so many have survived as long as they have.

Steve Miller/GrampiesThe stones look somewhat randomly placed, but they do seem to have stood the test of time.

Quite an interesting walk just north of the town through the olive groves and some ancient ruins

I think this answered the ‘chicken or the egg’ question for us. I’m not sure if new trees were being planted or old ones being dug up but ….

…. It was clear that the ground here is composed of endless rocks and if you want to plant anything, you would first have to clear out a lot of rocks. With no where else to put them, well you build a wall.

and once you’ve got all your rocks stacked up, go after the wood

love these classic old folding shopping bikes that are still in use

It was actually pretty quiet in town. This was the middle of what appeared to be a long and quite animated conversation between a couple of local folks.

When that was done, he was off. The signs only apply to bikes, not mopeds.

Steve Miller/GrampiesOr... another place where the signs are viewed as suggestions rather than rules.

Jacquie GaudetIt does say "recommendation" not simply "walk bikes".

‘Cause a day like today, well that’s me and K when were not compelled to do anything. We’re good at it too :)

Good night from Cres and the Dalmatian islands. Tomorrow it’s back to the mainland.
