Day 16 - Sibenik to Biograd na Moru

All day uphill

Why is the Beaufort wind scale still used for weather forecasts. I’m sure it’s useful for folks who sail (let’s see, that makes up about 0.1% of the world’s population), but the terms used make almost no sense to an average (nonsailing) English speaker.

What does ‘moderate’ mean to you? Probably something like ‘a bit’ or ‘not very much’.

As a cyclist what does a 28 km/hr wind mean to you. Probably ‘Crap, we’ve got to ride into this all day’. Well to Mr Beaufort, that’s just moderate. Maybe it’s not so bad on a penny farthing, the sort of thing he may have ridden.

Anyway, that’s what we had today. There was brilliant sunshine, not many hills and some pretty interesting sections of road/trail through more Roman ruins and very narrow stone walled line trails. The rest were basic highways with light to moderate traffic, not bad but nothing particularly special either.

We didn’t get checked out of of hotel in Šibenik until the last possible moment (great breakfast that we lingered over, I had this blog to finish and other general phaffing about) and then we took a little walking tour through Šibenik, a wonderful place.

So, our late start and all day headwind made it so we didn’t get into Biograd until much later than we had originally planned.

Not much more to say about today so here’s the pics.

Another beautiful day on the Dalmatian coast. The water was like glass up until right about now. We’ll pay for that later

A famous resident of Šibenik, Peter. Don’t know if he lived here from 1058 to 1074 or if that was the entire time he lived. If the latter, that’s one heck of a beard for a 16 year old.

Marjory SwordAmazing food you had and such a great presentation. A bit of a shock when you see the outside of the restaurant.

… and now, leaving Šibenik. Very lovely place!

The road out of Šibenik was a moderately busy highway for a few km’s and then we came to a fairly spectacular bridge over a gorge. No pics due to the traffic, however once over the bridge we were onto fairly interesting (in a good way) gravel paths and roads that we shared with no one!

The rough stuff in the pic above turned into this finer crush after a few hundred metres. Very good to ride on.

Once again, we were following the EV8 for most of the day

Interesting stone fences lining the route today. Here’s the well kept ‘modern section’

We stumbled upon another Roman ruin and we’re the only folks around.

Filling up the parking lot!

Then it was riding into the ‘rustic’ stone fenced section. This was really cool.

Looks like they may have been repurposed stone from the Roman ruins? These fences themselves are probably several centuries old

The rest of the day was on quiet roads like this until the last few km’s into Biograd where we were back onto a moderate traffic highway. Not bad, except for the persistent headwind.

Another ‘on the road meet up’ Virginia and Ruurd from Minnesota (we think?) Ruurd is originally from the Netherlands. They’re headed south towards Dubrovnik

‘What a drag it is getting old’ - sang Mick Jagger when he was 22. Still a few km’s out of Biograd and my butt was dragging. No energy today and the headwind had long sapped whatever I had. K’s probably checked in already!

Continuing on the ‘cover’ theme and stuff we’ve heard through the day ….

Our very nice hotel in Šibenik had a ‘lost in the ‘80’s’ lobby music track. When we were checking in and getting our bike storage sorted out (in the disabled toilet on the lower floor) it was back-to-back Springsteen. Over breakfast it was Elton’s turn, the last song of his being Sacrifice before Sinéad took over. This caused a way-back flashback for me that stuck in my head for the rest of the day. A little mellow, but it’s a beautiful song by a beautiful artist. It’s also from one of the first CD’s we ever bought, a really underrated (IMHO) tribute compilation to Elton John and Bernie Taupin -‘Two Rooms’ (one of the few time Bernie got equal billing …. And his lyrics were the high points of the songs)

Sacrifice, Sinéad O’Connor cover from Two Rooms

Good night from Biograd na Moru

Glenna JefferiesModerate being the 2nd level on the Avi scale.....so not low but pay attention and watch for situations that could arise. Compared to 28 kms/hr on a bike, maybe not so moderate if a headwind but pretty nice if warm and a tail wind 🤔. I think Kirsten and I went out sailing when it was gusting to 90 kms/hr, it didn't end so well. 28 would have been a piece of cake.
