Day 13 - Senigallia to Ancona

One of those days to endure

Not much to say about today. A short ride, a long wait and a peaceful sail.

This is the first time we’ve taken an overnight ferry during a bike trip (we did take one from Tallinn to Stockholm in 2008 with the kids to start a trip), and given the cancellation and following radio silence from Jadrolinija, and this being SNAV’s inaugrual service for the season, we were a bit worried about how this was all going to work.

The ferry was scheduled to leave at 19:30 and our booking information said to be there and checked in at 16:30. We also wanted to eat a bigger lunch in Ancona and avoid the ‘ferry food’ and crowds and therefore determined that we needed to be in Ancona by about 13:30.

We made it without difficulty.

The first 12 km’s were a rerun of the last few days, classic beachside riding on pretty much deserted roads and bike paths. After that, from Montemarciano  to Ancona things became increasingly built up and industrial. It wasn’t bad riding but it reminded us that we were approaching a bigger city that serves as one of the main Italian ports on the Adriatic.

The last few km’s into Ancona and down to the docks were ‘head down, focus on the narrow shoulder’ riding that aren’t fun, but aren’t horrible either. They just need to be endured and get finished.

The check in and staff at the SNAV passenger terminal were efficient and helpful and we had everything we needed done wrapped up by 13:30. Every thing wrapped up that is except getting onto the boat. That would be another 5 hrs away.

In retrospect we could have taken a longer much more pleasant ride here through the interior hills and still made it to the ferry with plenty of time and we’ll store that knowledge away for next time. On this occasion, our focus was  getting booked and physically onto the ferry as this was an essential link for the rest of our tour.

So, to fill our five hours … A bit of a tour around Ancona (which is built into a steep hillside, so our ‘tour’ was limited), a good lunch - burger and beer - very basic - we do do that! (that sounds like a Mowtown chorus but it is grammatically correct) and then onto the boat and a good night’s sleep in our tight but comfortable cabin.

We’ll awake tomorrow morning in Split and start round two of this adventure.

As a final note, it seems my spellchecking is now being ‘crowd sourced’. There’s several of you out there (you know who you are) and it’s appreciated. Keep it up!

Seven km’s down the road and another tip of our hat to Moreno and Mariella, hopefully we’ll be back again. Our night was fabulous.

That’s the end of the beach. Things are starting to get a bit more industrial as we approach Ancona. I’m getting a bit of a PTSD work flashback!

A small old refinery at Falconara about 10 km north of Ancona. ‘Just get it done’ cycling from here on.

This was right beside the refinery. It actually translates to Little River, but that wasn’t my first thought.

We’ve arrived! At the SNAV passenger check in at Ancona. Now we’ve just got 5 hours to kill.

Lunch took up part of that.

Pretty bargy pigeons. The folks at this table had only left at most 10 seconds ago and they had the table pecked clean

Karen PoretThey are smarter than you think. Just like the seagull’s that swoop in at the end of the 7th inning at Pac Bell Park for “their” meal. 🙄

Hanging out at the Mole Vanvitelliana, a 18th century quarantine centre built on an artificial island in the harbour that’s now been converted into a cultural centre. Just a short 5 minute flat ride to our boat!

Yeah, we’re looking forward to getting horizontal too.

It’s time. Off to the boat. It looks like a perfect evening to sail.

….as we would soon be as well.

We’ve had smaller hotel rooms. Tonight will be fine.

Glenna JefferiesHopefully not sharing with strangers. After reading Paul Theroux and all his train bunk room sharing, it is not appealing to ever do that.

Last look at Ancona

Our boat was over an hour late leaving. The ‘Superfast’ in the background arrived and left while we were still here. I guess they’ve earned their name

Last look at Italy for a while, we’ll be back in a few weeks but much farther north.

Fear of the Water (Piano Solo) by SYML

We had a very peaceful crossing, almost dead calm, and a great night’s sleep. A calm way to end the day and the wonderful first leg of this tour.

Round one over, see you in Croatia.
