To Waren (Müritz)
a lost key
Yesterday when we checked into our hotel we were shown the storage area for our bikes. It was not really ideal as it was outside and in a some what of an open area. Making do, we used our trusty cable lock to secure the bikes to the rack and then took all of our belongings up to our room. We think that some where in this process Scott may have dropped the key to the lock. It was a kryptonite cable lock so although quite well made, it was fortunately not 100% indestructible.
In the morning while gathering our things we could not find the key anywhere. Acknowledging defeat after looking everywhere, we came to the conclusion that we needed to cut through the cable lock. Problem, we have no bike stealing tools... All the hotel manager could come up with was a rusty old saw designed to cut wood. Finding a weak spot where the cable goes into the lock Scott began to saw away. With a bit of effort the saw did do the trick but it is doubtful that it will be much good for anything else in the future - the saw or the lock! Not the best way to start our day but not a catastrophe either. We are now in the market for a new lock.
The weather forecast for today had indicated a rainy morning which had motivated us to work toward an earlier start. The lock issue changed that and we ended up heading off at our usual time of 10 o`clock! The rain never materialized and it was mainly warm and sunny for our ride to Waren, which lies on Lake Müritz. It is the largest inland lake lying entirely within Germany and has an area of 117 square kilometres.

If we had followed the B-K cycle route it would have taken us completely all around the lake but we shaved off a few kilometres by going over a bridge that cuts across the lake area. The day started with a fast 10 KM on a cycle path beside a main road before it turned off and into a much quieter forested section. Most of our ride today was along quiet rural area roads or in forested sections. It was only nearing our destination that we actually found a spot to sit and have our daily coffee stop. By this point Scott was pretty certain he was in an advanced state of caffeine withdrawal.

The afternoon was quite relaxed and then in the early evening it began to thunder, lightening and rain heavily. It all stopped around 8 o`clock and we set out to the old town for dinner. The first two restaurants that we chose were open but told us the kitchen was closed. Being Sunday night, many others were not open at all. We did find a very Asian place where we skipped the all you can eat buffet in favour of tasty chicken, rice and vegetable dishes. It was all good the service was excellent. We walked along the lake shore back to the hotel with large lightening bolts lighting up the sky and the sounds of loud thunder that followed shortly. An exciting finish to the day.
Today's ride: 44 km (27 miles)
Total: 1,069 km (664 miles)
