To Hann. (Hannoversch) Münden

Seven days already

After a number of days of cycling in a row we have our daily get out the door routine  pretty well down. But, our bodies quickly remind us of stiffness and small aches when we start to push the pedals down. Our route  was again along the Fulda River. It is, after all, over 200 kms long! Today was to be a shorter ride to the town of Hann. Münden where the Fulda River meets the Werra River to form the single Weser River. Much more on that later.

We started the day with the hotel breakfast buffet. The offerings and presentation styles are becoming familiar and the quality of choices are really quite good.  Plates of lox, meats, beautiful fresh veggie platters and amazing looking cheeses are not uncommon! We filled ourselves with scrambled eggs, sausages as well as muesli, lots of fresh fruit and yogurt. Sharing a small piece of cake  with the last sips of coffee was a fitting way to start our physical day. No counting calories now!

It had rained a small amount overnight and was a cooler morning than our previous days. The extra layers we put on were welcomed as we retraced our route downhill along the street and across the river to the cycle path. If you can be, we were thankful for the first short steep incline to get ourselves warmed up. The sun was starting to appear sporadically and that helped warm things up, too. The easy to follow route quickly entertained us with the sights of the river, bridges, trains and farm animals. We do not seem to ask for much.

Train crossing with the path just on the other side. With only three cars it was a short wait.

The train goes over this bridge. I spent time analyzing the renovations of the large span over the river that were completed many years ago.

Our crossing has horses.

Looking back at the parallel train bridge crossing you can clearly make out the old and the new parts.

A poster beside our ride also provided detail of the construction project. The old bridge had support columns right in the river.

Rebuilding it with a single arch bank to bank in 1952 was a big deal.

Beside the path, sheep with big coats and the baby black ones behind.

and lots of chickens too.

The rooster scratched the ground and the hens all came running. We had no idea what that was about.

Steve Miller/GrampiesThe rooster has 3 jobs. 1. Mate with the hens so they make babies. 2. Watch the sky for predators and give warning and 3. Find and show the hens where the food is.

There were few towns to visit on our ride today but Kassel was at the 20 km mark. It is actually a city with a population of over 200K people. We  did not venture too deep and  just followed the path along its peripheral. The parks and areas along the river are very well developed with paddling clubs, tennis courts, aquatic centers including an outdoor diving pool and restaurants. It was a great place to stop for a coffee.

On the outskirts of Kassel we were redirected. Maintaining or improving the cycle routes. It seems on this trip that a closed route is actually closed!

We found ourselves right beside a full on regatta. There were both single and double kayak competitions.

Barry DevlinAI Overview

A flock of herons is often referred to as a "siege". While other collective nouns like "sedge," "station," or "glean" can also be used to describe groups of herons, "siege" is the most commonly recognized term.

Just a really pretty, quiet ride but the path can be busy on Sundays so you need to keep your wits about you.

Looking across and hardly a ripple on the water.

We reached Hann by around 3 pm and explored the streets by bike. It has a well deserved reputation as a beautiful place with many historic buildings. We have an apartment for two nights to get a rest day and explore the area more completely.

Entering the town. We found it surprisingly quiet for what we would consider a touristy spot.

A large square beside Saint Blasius church. The half timbered buildings have such amazing detail they are a real sight to see.
