To Bodenwerder

Follow the Weser

As usual, we completely filled ourselves up at the hotel buffet breakfast. We were pleased to see that the warm, sunny weather streak continues. Gathering our bikes from the locked garage we left the busy road in front of our hotel to ride down the much calmer Weserstrasse  to the river. Here, Scott struck up a conversation with a man who was out for a walk with his young daughter. The man was quite knowledgeable about bicycles and was very interested in the design of our Bike Fridays. He liked the bike and its practicality for travel but he thought that his wife would not approve of another bike being added to his already large collection!

Today our route pretty much  followed the Weser River all the way to Bodenwerder except for a short stretch at roughly 15KM into the ride through the pretty town of Höxter. It was a bit too early for a coffee stop but a great place to pick up a sandwich for lunch.

We have been spoiled with the number of elaborate half timber buildings in the towns in which we have been staying. Beverungen`s Weserstrasse is also attractive and The Cordt Holstein House, named after a former mayor and builder of the building was built in1662.

Laura SeiditaI lived in Germany (in Hanau) in the early 90's and am really enjoying following your trip and seeing the scenery again!

It is wonderful to see the continued maintenance that keeps these beautiful buildings current.

The detailed woodwork can be quite amazing with the carved words and ornate paint scemes.

Another gem on Weserstrasse.

Beverungen is also well known for hosting concerts. From the internet, ¨At first glance, Beverungen may seem like a quiet small town on the Weser, but it has long since made a name for itself: Thanks to the Beverungen Cultural Community, high-quality concerts and cultural events take place here with an unusual frequency for cities of this size. With the Weser Open Air 2025 in Beverungen, the city is once again proving that it is a hotspot for musical highlights. ¨

The Weser Open Air 2025 concert will take place right here. Looks like a nice setting.

Back on the Weser Radweg, day two.

Along the wall beside the village of Blankenau. A small village resides behind the walls.

We keep bumping into many other tourers all the way. They always offer a smile and a wave.

The Weser has many places that you can make your way to the water`s edge.

Swans have their favourite spots, too.

A closer look.

Town Hall of the Historic City of Höxter. We left the cycle path and entered the town of Höxter by heading up this street.

A busy pedestrian street that was also having a small market.

Fancy detail on a building in Hoxter.

Abbey of Corvey in Höxter is a Unesco world heritage site. We had a quick look inside the gates but such a large complex would need quite a bit of time to do it justice.

Riding beside the Corvey Abbey in the shade of the plane trees.

Funny lambs right beside the path - you just have to take their picture as they are very cute.

Hamming it up in Hol. We had lunch here along a river side promenade.

Our lunch view. These kayakers were heading downstream with almost no effort. We saw them several times along the way.

The last ten kms of the ride to Bodenwerder followed beside some very large meandering loops of the Weser. A straight line would have surely cut the distance in half. Sometimes we had a head wind and then with a sudden 180 degree turn we enjoyed a tailwind until the next meander. The scenery and sights always continue to be interesting.

Easy riding.

The farm fields are quite large in the Weser valley.

The Polle Castle. During the Thirty Years' War, it was destroyed by Swedish troops in 1641 and remains in ruins.

This maybe Grave. Just one of the many towns we have passed along our ride today.

A final rest before we finished the day`s ride. The cycle path`s supporting benches and tables are very good.

Weser river boat. Looking at the river, this appears to be a pretty big boat.

Cute, but not our home for the night.

Not sure what we might find in Bodenwerder, we stopped just outside the town at Campingplatz Himmelspforte to have a cool one in the sun. Not fancy but the service was excellent and the beer cheap!

Crossing the bridge, we quickly found our hotel immediately on the other side of the river. Bodenwerder is another small, quiet town with a nice pedestrian street just up from the river. After walking the street, we settled on a Greek restaurant and we both enjoyed the Moussaka and salad.

View of the Weser River from our hotel room.

It was busy at times.

Pretty quiet on the main pedestrian street on a Wednesday evening.

This fountain in Bodenwerder shows three of the most famous Münchhausen stories: the horse at the church tower, the duck flight and the ride on the cannonball.

This one is obvious.
