To Bad Hersfeld

Along the Fulda River

Our  loft style apartment in Fulda was beautiful. It was newly renovated, had two decks, great views and was in the older core area. The internet was also very good. But there was no breakfast plan so Pat ran out to a nearby grocery store in the morning to buy some yogurt, bananas and muesli to get us going. Fortunately, Scott could make coffee from an easy to use Nespresso machine.  It was a nice change and all we needed.

After breakfast Scott carefully carried our bikes down the steep, narrow,   circular wooden staircase. The bikes were loaded and again we were riding by 10 am. Seems like our schedule. It was another dry but cool feeling morning as we made our way through the scenic parks and river area that border the edge of Fulda. Our route would follow the Fulda River and we did cross it several times over the next 50 kilometres as we headed to Bad Hersfeld. We easily followed the well-marked, designated cycle path through  very picturesque farm country. Despite the occasional strong headwind blowing down the valley, it was a very enjoyable ride.

Picture perfect riding conditions.

The Fulda River is on the right with rolling hills on both sides.

Occasionally passing through quiet, pretty little hamlets. Brähler Getränkemarkt here.

We are finding that the cycle paths are completely separate from the no shoulder roads making it quite obvious where cyclists are supposed to be.

Steve Miller/GrampiesAnd even more importantly, making provision for them to be there.

Away from the road and beside the river the path surfaces can turn to gravel but are still nice to ride at a slower pace.

Then back through the farm land and it can be as straight and flat as it gets. Once again, Pat's puffy jacket indicates a strong headwind!

Cows watching us along the way.

Found a bit of info on the BahnRadweg (Railroad Bike Path in English) Hessen that we have been following lately and it will take us all the way to Bad Hersfeld today.

We see many different path identifying numbers tagged at each bike path directional sign, but this symbol was new. Riding old rail beds!

Easy rolling. You can just make out the wind turbines on top of the hill. The wind did slow us down a bit and made us slightly more tired today.

The last few kilometres to Bad Hersfeld had us doing a few back tracks as we encountered a closed section on the bike path and we had to reroute via the not obvious detour bike signs. We entered the pretty town of Bad Hersfeld that has been referred to as, ¨the festival and spa town¨, and found a place to enjoy a beer. Afterward we found our hotel just outside of the main town where  we later walked back to enjoy a lovely pasta and salad meal at Pizzeria Am Lullusbrunnen. Heading home, we had to hide under cover a few times to avoid a passing rain shower. Hopefully that this will be just a night time thing.

Some well maintained old half timber homes can be found here. In fact it is claimed that one of the buildings dates back to 1452.
