Last day in Frankfurt

Ready, set, go!

For dinner last night we went to an Italian restaurant, Trattoria I Siciliani, which was right at the end of our block. We both had different pasta plates and shared a large salad with an orange tiramisu for dessert. It was a busy restaurant when we arrived for the late dinner and but when we left at 11 pm we were some of the last guests. We completely enjoyed ourselves!

In the morning we felt more rested as we are slowly adjusting to the time change and looked forward to our last day in Frankfurt. We are feeling like it is time to start the tour. The weather today was perfect for walking the  streets. After our breakfast at a local café we headed back across the river into the core of the business district of the city with the plan to find one of the tallest buildings  which had a public viewing area on the roof. The Main Tower is a 56-storey, 200 m (656 ft) skyscraper. The views in many directions provided an unobstructed view of the city and surrounding area. It allowed us to assemble in our brains the different locations that we had seen in our travels the last couple of days. Very worth the five or so euro price tag to take the elevator just short of the top floor. A  stair climb is needed after that.

We are finding many breakfast options in our neighbourhood on the busy Schweizer Strasse. This was a dish offering from Hucks Lieblingsplatz, part bakery and part light meal restaurant. If we are not in a hurry we find the hotel breakfasts more food than we need and a bit pricy.

Huge thrift market down by the river on Saturday mornings. It looked like you just grab a spot and display what you have for sale. Lots of clothes and random stuff but nothing we needed.

Steve Miller/GrampiesThe Europeans just love their "junk" markets. We are less enthused since we spend a lot of our time at home sorting through our stuff and eliminating much of it.

Some bikes are long forgotten in the public bike racks . Some parts are poached over time and they fall into total disrepair. Then some get spray painted and lashed upside down to a nearby pole. Interesting art installations!

Not too busy up top on the observation platform when we arrived. We got lucky as they were lined up outside when we left.

Frankfurt has skyscraper buildings intermixed with communities of older 4-6 story walk up apartments. We rode through the residential neighbourhood pictured yesterday. With its abundance of large, leafy trees it looked like a nice place to live.

In the distance low to the ground you can see the Hauptbahnhof - Frankfurt`s main station with the large rail yard stretching out behind. The Main River is on the left.

Aerial view of the main shopping street in the city of Frankfurt Main - the Zeil. It looks to be busy Saturday morning.

Back at ground level we continued our walk, often reacquainting ourselves with some of the areas we had seen on our first day in Frankfurt. We also took the opportunity to see the historic Jewish Cemetery.

Between the towers shows with a jet above.

The enclosing wall of the cemetery contains name blocks commemorating nearly 12,000 Frankfurt holocaust victims.

After lunch we returned to our hotel to organize our panniers for the ride tomorrow. The bike suitcases and any unneeded clothes will be left at our hotel.

It is busy crossing Alte Brücke bridge as part of it is under repair. We liked the outfit of the girl on the bike riding in stilettos!

We had dinner at a busy tavern called Wirtshaus im Ostend. We both had the fish special. A very German dish with battered filet and potato salad. A bit like fish and chips. Our walk home took us along the bank of the Main  to the iron bridge as the sun set over the downtown core. The river boat bars were full tonight but after walking over 22 K steps today our beds were calling us home. We want to be fully ready to start the tour tomorrow.

End of the day - Frankfurt.
