On the walk from the barge towards the ferry, a local group were exercising. Very difficult for me to NOT join in! 😂

Free baggage carts for those extra large items that are brought along and too big for stowing on board. So necessary for some and everyone is so helpful!

My bike rental. A Batavus brand true “Dutch” bike! I liked the hand control for speed..it was a rotate style instead of using your thumb.

Steve Miller/GrampiesWe both have twist shifters on our bikes. Much easier to use, especially with arthritic thumbs.

Tom FlournoyI wonder if this is harder to fall over when everyone is on board. I road with my brother-in-law yesterday on a road bike and he hit the pavement trying to make a U-turn at slow speed. I wonder if this quad tandem bike fall over since all 4 bikers would have to "fall." Unless everyone's clipped in, presumably the ones that weren't "falling" would just plant their feet down and hold the bike up? -Mark

Karen PoretTo Tom FlournoyProblematic for anyone in this situation with too many thoughts going through each persons mind at ONE time. However, a definite thud would not be a good thing. The weight of the bike plus all four people would not make for a “soft” landing…

Steve Miller/GrampiesYup. They really make a mess when the path goes through their grazing area. Don't forget to keep the gates closed at either end of the pasture area!

Karen PoretTo Steve Miller/GrampiesIt was a real chore today to make certain the gates were closed.. especially in the wind!

Practical, smart, and recyclable. Now, if only we could get the barge and boat businesses to not toss overboard ( sometimes)

On the ferry back to the barge. Gee. This is a lot of water travel for a bike ride! My helmet and leftover lunch of lettuce, cucumber and tomato. Hit the spot!

Disembarked ( remember that *word in Disneyland?) from the ferry and walking towards the barge. * what kid knew what this meant when we were supposed to get OFF of a ride?
Heart 0 Comment 0

Whoo boy.. Wind was the driver ( and not tailwinds, sadly) as we rode from the ferry dock around the island of Terschelling.

The barge captain decided yesterday due to the forecast we were to rent bicycles instead of taking our own, due to extreme wind preventing us from sailing safely to and from.

The sun was out for a bit when we arrived at noon, but by the time we were to leave the island and return to the ferry it was overcast and even more windy, letting us know the barge captain was, indeed accurate.

Steve Miller/GrampiesDon't forget to enter the distance bicycled each day, or you don't get credit for it.

Steve Miller/GrampiesTo Karen PoretYou can always edit later, even a few days later, even when you get home later. Just make sure to hit the "minor edit" box before you save so you don't keep bringing the edits of the older pages to the top of the list of posted journals.

Steve Miller/GrampiesTo Karen PoretYou are doing just fine for a first timer. Don't be too hard on yourself. We (readers) really just want to be able to get a little glimpse into the world as you see it. Whatever you manage to put up is better than not even trying, and it is interesting to see places we know from a slightly different perspective.

Laura SeiditaKaren,
Was glad to see your journal for the bike and barge trip. I enjoyed following your trip (albeit a little late) and glad you decided to do the journal!

Now that you've done your first one, all the rest will be easy! :-)

Laura SeiditaTo Karen PoretYes! Sometimes it is hard at the end of a long day to organize your thoughts and then take the time to get it written.

I makes notes during the day when riding hoping not to forget things - and then I always manage to forget something 😉 Just part of the "fun" !

I like looking back at old journals and reliving the trips so find it is worth it. Plus, think of all the others living vicariously through you - can't leave them hanging. 😆
