Out and Back gravel ride - Rovinj

View the Vidikovac Limski Canal

Today was an out and back gravel ride to a view point above the Vidikovac Limski canal we had a very gradual climb out and a coast back, practically no pedaling on the way back. Then back to the boat for lunch and an explore before our city tour of Rovinj.

Rovinj is a very interesting town. Originally the town was just on an island and that is where the old town is today.  In the 1600s the town filled in the gap between the island and the mainland so they could expand the population. The current town square is built on what used to be water.

Our trail was an old railroad corridor. In most places the rails were covered by the trail.

Lots of gravel some of it was smooth like this but there are parts that were loose or a little rocky. Each time we came to a crossing there were barriers that we had to go around.

In front of the cyclists you can see the metal barriers that we had to go around at each crossroad.

greta combsWas that some sort of cruise ship in the distance? The canal must be pretty deep to allow that ship to pass.

Still water and coke or Fanta, typical orders

greta combsIn the Netherlands, I was amused to be asked whether I wanted blue or red water. Apparently one is flat and the other is carbonated. My husband and I drank a lot of grapefruit Fanta and found it to be lovely.

The streets are made of limestone blocks that are smoothed down from centuries of traffic. Apparently they are extremely slippery when wet.

A typical courtyard where children play people drink coffee and gossip. In the old town the kitchens were on the top floor and a family would live in a studio sized apartment all in the building would share the kitchen. The kitchens would have an open stone fire pit for cooking and heat.

greta combsWonder why the kitchens were on the top floor? You would think it would be cooler on the bottom floor.

Terinino is a local liqueur made from grapes. We had some at dinner and it is wonderful, it tastes like liquid cherries!
