Day 2 - Skyland Lodge
Day 2 - Mathews Arm Campground to Skyland Lodge. Today's section of Skyline Drive continued to offer great views. The biggest difference was the traffic. Being Saturday, traffic was a little heavier, but the motorists were very respectful. The overlooks, that are scattered along the Drive can offer a welcome break from the vehicle traffic and the constantly rolling terrain.
Skyland Lodge is very nice, it offers two sit-down restaurants. I reserved a room there; the views were amazing. Tip - book early if you can rooms sell out quick. Also, don't expect to get an early check-in. I assume it was lack of staff, but they were very strict on the check-in time which is 4 p.m. And one other thing, if you are biking ~ and your legs are worn out ~ know that it is a significant grunt to get walk from the lodging to dinner. There is a path to follow, but it is all uphill.
You might be tempted to skip Skyland and go onto the popular Big Meadows Campground - which is a great stop ~ but know it will be a big ask of your legs. (Note: Skyland offers a beautiful location for the sunset.)
