Snug Harbor-the highest and lowest point of our day

Cycling San Juan Island Day 2

After a very quiet night, I was awakened at 5:45 am by multiple large trucks and then cars passing by our inn. The first ferry of the day must have just disgorged its cargo. I closed our open window and went back to sleep until 7.

Jim, Rich and I had a nice breakfast in town. Amber was still full from last night’s excellent dinner so she stayed behind for a quiet morning of coffee in the garden at our Inn.

We rolled a little after 10. While it was single layer weather, the air still had some crispness left in it. We followed the same route out of town, then turned in the opposite direction, towards the more southern portion of the island.

Like yesterday, the scenery was exceptional. I especially liked cycling along the shoreline, at times high above it and other times right on the water.

One of the big advantages of touring on e-bikes became more apparent to me today. For example, being able to dive off the main road and descend a steep hill without dreading the inevitable climb back out. Touring for me has always been like that-full of anticipation and dread. With the e-bike, it’s all anticipation but no dread.

We descended one of those roads, with grades of 14%, to get to our refreshment stop at Snug Harbor. It’s a very nifty little harbor with a well-appointed resort that rents cabins. It is in a lovely setting, seemed very quiet, and the coffee and snack shop had complimentary drip coffee-always a plus in my book. The climb back out was no sweat, thanks to e-assist.

We arrived back at our rooms in the early afternoon with time to clean up and relax a bit. Tomorrow is a rest day and we have plans to visit the Roche Harbor sculpture garden and go whale watching.

Field, water, mountain-it doesn’t get much better

This is a driveway leading up to someone’s little slice of heaven.

Low tide mudflats. I didn’t realize how shallow the bays of the Salish Sea really are.

Genny FoxGood morning Jeff,
We are on the island only one more day and have a tight schedule until this evening. If you are home, however, we would enjoy meeting you. If it doesn’t work, perhaps another time since we are loving the islands and already talking about coming back.

Scott AndersonIt's nice to see this island again. I was a camp counselor in Lopez back in college, but San Juan is my favorite for cycling. It's been too long since we've been back ourselves.

Jeff ArnimTo Genny FoxSorry to have missed you. It was a busy day of work emergencies, taking an old dog to the vet, and pulling around a kid in a little red wagon! It sounds like you all had a great time on San Juan Island, and it looks like it'll be a spectacular day to cycle around Orcas. Enjoy!
