Port Ludlow to Sequim

The weather gods are teasing us

We are inching closer to Canada but the weather today was stunning. 60’s, sunny, light wind-perfect riding weather in my book. The forecast for tomorrow is for some rain but exactly when is a moving target. Tomorrow we catch our first ferry to Victoria, BC.

Today, however, was delightful, starting with breakfast at the hotel. A bit pricey but the quality was there and we had a different and very attentive waiter.

We rolled at 11:00. No point in going earlier since the ride is only 32 miles and we cannot check in to our accommodations until after 3.

The first couple of miles were on a 2-lane highway but we soon left it and traveled on sparsely traveled backroads. These all had great pavement and the views were stunning where there were breaks in the trees. We did a series of climbs that gave us vantage for even better views.

We rolled at a leisurely pace, stopping here and there for photos.

We think this is a retired firehouse that is now being used as a garage or barn.

The last 17 miles to Sequim was on the Olympic Discovery Trail. This proved to be some bike path, some rural road and a little bit of highway riding (Hwy 20-very busy.) Obviously the bike trail portions were the best but the rural road, which I would say comprised about 60% of the total, was very quiet, low traffic, and well paved.

This looked like a defunct restaurant or motel in rail cars on the ODT.

I took these two photos for Kelly Iniguez, who loves to stay in places like this.

Kelly IniguezYou bring those memories right back! It's been a few years, but that caboose overnight was good for plenty of laughs. Note that it was in Canada and we had rain . . .

We arrived in Sequim at 2:30 and were able to check into the Holiday Inn Express. It is undergoing some modifications but will be adequate for the night. We immediately had lunch at the Black Bear Diner next door. In true touring cyclist style, Rich ordered a tiny cup of soup as an appetizer and Apple Cobbler a la mode as his entree’. The rest of us had rather boring, but filling meals.

Tomorrow we will get an earlier start since we need to catch the 12:45 ferry. We have been advised that if you are not there at least 60 minute early, you forfeit your reservation (for the truck.) The policy is a little looser for those of us walking on with our bicycles.

Today's ride: 32 miles (51 km)
Total: 59 miles (95 km)
