Day 9: Casey, IL to Terre Haute, IN

Big Things Small Town

I had a little bit of extra time to see some things in town this morning since I was doing my shortest ride yet. So I rode into Casey with one goal: to see some big things. And that I did!

This town had a very cute vibe to it. Their motto was “Big Things in a Small Town”

They had many more things to look at, like the world’s largest ruler, teeter totter, wind chimes, and more. But these two seemed to be the biggest!

I also took a pitch with a pretty large softball bat

But after I left Casey, nothing else was really picturesque. It was cloudy for a good chunk of the day. I grabbed a quick lunch in Martinsville. Morgan’s Cafe had a very yummy Buffalo chicken quesadilla. After that, I just pumped out miles to Terre Haute. It was mostly paved backroads, but one section of gravel road was very rough. It had rocks that have no place being in a road, with steep slopes, and at the bottom of a hill there was a creek running over the road! I mean, it’s like they didn’t even try. After that, I crossed into Indiana without a single sign to welcome me, and got closer to Terre Haute. The roads got busier, and the rain got closer. It started to sprinkle as I got into town, and it wasn’t a great place to ride. There was no bike lane for a majority, and some parts of the sidewalk didn’t have ramps to enter or exit the sidewalk on. But I made it to Nate’s, who was willing to host me for the night, and met his family. His oldest daughter just graduated from elementary school and she wanted to have a little pool party. And I figured it would probably be good for my muscles, so I went for a little swim. After that, Nate and his wife Heather made a delicious pasta dinner, and Nate helped me plan out my route to Indianapolis for tomorrow! It seems like he put a lot of effort into it for his last guest, but they ended up not using it :(

But I’m going to make use of it tomorrow! That is, if it ever stops raining… there are some pretty serious thunderstorms coming through town tonight. But at least it didn’t hit me during the day!

Today's ride: 46 miles (74 km)
Total: 436 miles (702 km)
