Day 8: Effingham to Casey
Catching Wind of New Gear
Today was a short day, and tomorrow will be too. I opted to take my time to get to Terre Haute, because it’s looking like Thursday will be a rain day. I took advantage of this time to go to a bike shop in Effingham and get a few things fixed. My rear tire was showing some pretty significant wear, so we replaced that. And I had busted pedals so I upgraded to nicer flat metal pedals.
They also checked a couple things out on the bike and got it tuned up and ready to go! After this, it was pretty similar to yesterday. Backroads, fields, and heat. Except for one thing. The wind. It was insanely windy today. It gets windy back in Kansas, but I guess I’ve never had to ride my bike in it. All day long it was blowing double digit speeds northward. Luckily, this was only a headwind for a short period of time. I did stop in Toledo for a small ice cream, (mostly to fill up my water) but they were out of chocolate so I had to get cookies and cream. Soft serve. I don’t know how cookies and cream can be soft serve but it wasn’t anything special. But I regrouped with a bit of sugar and fresh water and trudged forward to Casey. I got a cabin at a KOA campground and I think that was the right call. I was able to do laundry, plus they had a pool!
Unfortunately the water was still too cold for me. But it was nice to sit by for a while. I showered up and did some laundry, and got ready for bed. Casey has some cool tourist attractions, so I’m going to get some photos with those tomorrow! See you there!
Today's ride: 47 miles (76 km)
Total: 390 miles (628 km)
