Day 10: Terre Haute to Indianapolis

Ups and Downs

Today was a loaded day. I woke up in Terre Haute and had a quick breakfast with Nate and his kids. They were on their way to summer camp so I left at the same time as them. It rained all night long, but stopped in the morning. The forecast said there was a 30% chance of rain at 11 and that would be it. So I rode off with Indianapolis as the goal. Nate had a fantastic route planned for me, allowing me to see the Bridgeton Mill, where I got a BLT and a Root Beer.

The lady running the mill wouldn’t let me pay after I told her my story! Bridgeton was beautiful. But not long after I left, the rain would return. That 30% chance at 11 suddenly became rain all the way until 2 o’clock. I was miserable. I was soaked from head to toe, and as pretty as Nate’s route was, it was also fairly hilly at this point. I think the squirrels and deer may have heard some obscenities… but I kept going. Eventually I stopped at a McDonald’s to dry off and wait out the rain. While I was inside, I was talking to an elderly couple about my trip, and they gave me 10 dollars to “cover my lunch,” so I got a 20 piece nugget and a sweet tea. Eventually it stopped raining and it was time to get back on the road. Greencastle wasn’t very bike-able until the edge of town, where I picked up the Vandalia trail for 10 miles. Once it ended, I was able to take county roads all the way into the outskirts of Indianapolis. This was shaping up to be a 92 mile day, so I didn’t grab too many photos. I was focused on the task at hand, which was getting to Marco’s (who was hosting me tonight) before the steak came off his grill! I was on trails for miles in Indianapolis, until I finally had to get on the road. And the second I did, boom.

I was only 8 miles away, so I called Marco, and he picked me up. He made a fantastic dinner on the grill, and then we fixed up my flat tire together. Marco has a super awesome setup here! Tomorrow we will plan out my route to Cincinnati, and then I’ll be on my way!

Today's ride: 84 miles (135 km)
Total: 520 miles (837 km)
