Testing our mettle

Riding the Flow Velo: Rochefort to Cognac

Our Jersey escapade over, we're back on our bikes. Another wrinkle in the space-time continuum saw us change countries as well as time zones again. This involved one ferry, two passport inspections and three trains - and took all of yesterday. Gotta love time travel.

I found this sign at Nantes station rather disturbing. Does anyone else see 'do not collapse on your bike'?

Mike AylingLooks like the person on the bike is tucked down for extra speed.
I am concerned that scooters, usually without brakes appear to be permitted.

This morning we're reluctant to leave our comfy hotel in the thermal spa town of Rochefort. Because, after three weeks of cycling in (mostly) glorious summer weather, we wake up to rain. Wet rain. This will be a test of our commitment to cycle touring.

But it's a test we're determined to pass. We're riding the newish La Flow Velo from the Atlantic coast to the Dordogne. Specifically, our destination is Perigueux, which is just a short train ride from our good friends Jill and Brian, who have taken up temporary residence in Le Buisson-de-Cadouin.

Once again, it's a day of two halves as we follow the meandering Charente river. This morning, feeling the need to occupy my mind, I create a fanciful scenario that sees us as hapless actors on a film set, with an invisible director calling the shots to an attentive minion.

'Can we have some more driving rain please? They're not wet enough yet.

'And we need to chuck in a few more undulating hills. Come on, we haven't got all day! [That's good to hear.]

'Okay, call off the rain. We'll do wind from now on . . . What's that? What direction? Oh, just make it swirl around.'

It's a relief to reach Saintes, a good sized town, for a break. After I send the voices in my head packing, we buy lunch from a supermarket and then enjoy a coffee.

Jacquie GaudetThis looks beautiful! The rain seems to have ended before you got to Saintes. When I arrived there a few months before you did, travelling La Flow Vélo in the opposite direction, the skies opened just as I arrived in town and the streets literally became rivers.

Robyn RichardsTo Jacquie GaudetYes, I think we were dry for the rest of the day. Where did you begin La Flow Velo?

Jacquie GaudetI picked it up in Chateauneuf-sur-Charente and followed it, more or less, most of the way to Saintes. From Saintes to Rochefort, where I picked up La Vélodyssée, I took roads because I wanted to ride on asphalt. I love those quiet roads in France!

The afternoon whizzes by, courtesy of a consistent tail wind and some smooth tarmac. (Tour Leader makes some good navigational calls to occasionally take us off the marked trail in the interests of making faster progress.) We roll into Cognac, today's destination, before 4pm, happy chappies.

So, how did we do in the mettle-testing department today?

Thumbs up!
