I quit smoking and bought a touring bike set up in 1980

Some History

I’ll never forget the day my friend Laury came over who used to smoke 2 packs of Cigarettes a day.  She was someone I never expected to hear the words “I quit smoking” from!  That night she shared how good she felt, it had been two weeks and she started running.  That was all it took for me to decide to quit smoking for myself.

I knew I’d never be an “old smoker” but I hadn’t yet thought about quitting.  I smoked my last cigarette that night and the next day I started telling everyone that I quit smoking.  I counted the days, each day I didn’t smoke the feeling of accomplishment just kept feeling better and better.  I decided to put the money I would normally spend on cigarettes every day in a Jar and I decided to start running too!!!

After a year of Non Smoking exchanging that habit for the healthy habit of running.  I had a Jar full of money and I lost 50lbs!!  It was time to buy something and after being completely inspired that year after meeting this couple who had ridden their bikes from Jasper down to Banff.  I decided to buy a touring bike and panniers .  I set a goal to ride across the US and then go Tour Europe!!!

I was so excited, I bought everything I’d need to camp out etc.  I did a 3 day practice run.  All I can remember is how hard it was!!!  I thought to myself oh no….How could I ever ride across the US????

So the dream got put on the shelf for “later”……

Mark M.Long distances can be hard. But the next pedal stroke is usually achievable, in my limited experience. 😉

I have an idea that you're about to suprise us all, a little? Good luck...
