Pancake Wars

After last night’s post, I walked 3/4 mile up the road to grab some dinner. When I went to leave it was pouring. Good news is PSG was inside warm and dry. Bad news is I had to walk back 3/4 mile in heavy rain. Did I mention the thunder…yeah it was thundering. With no other option I went out and started running (as a reference point, I don’t think I’ve run a mile straight in 10 years). I ran to the Ford dealer and took shelter in their entrance way. Then I did what any reasonably intelligent (stop laughing) 65 year old would do…I called for a Lyft. Having no luck even though they were going to charge me $17.95 for a 1/2 mile ride, I took off running again. This time I ran through a hotel lobby and stopped again under a random building awning before running the length of a motel under the awning and finally making it home soaked. Mike, the motel owner was kind enough to let me use the dryer so I’d have something to wear today that wasn’t soaked. He actually delivered the dry clothes to my room, but he refused to fold them…seriously what kind of service is that 😜. Thanks Mike.

On to today. Short, flat ride along route 2 also known as bike route 10. Started out with rain gear and then got too hot so I stripped down. Eventually it started to drizzle, so I put only my jacket on. Of course having put all the rain gear on ensured it wouldn’t rain hard and it didn’t.

After grabbing lunch I met Mark and his group of youths who were riding from about the bridge to Mackinaw Island to somewhere in Minnesota. Mark is 72 and he started a youth club in Pittsburgh called Pittsburgh Youth Leadership. Among other things he introduces them to cycling and takes them on trips like this. They average about 80 miles a day and have a sag van that takes their stuff from hotel to hotel along the way. Oh to be young again.

Having some free time, I headed over to the local marina. On the way there I met a lady and her 3 pet ducks. They were walking around eating ticks in the neighbors’ yards. I joked about them being her pets, but they really are 🦆

Finally I made it to the marina and took a couple of pictures. No swimming.

Tomorrow is Ferry Day. One over to Mackinaw Island and the other to Mackinaw City. Do you say Ferry and Fairy the same way or do they sound like two totally different words? Just wondering. How about orange? Do you say ORange or AREange? I could go on but I won’t.

Till tomorrow

Wait I forgot about Pancake Wars. Having never grown up and having no plans to do so, I love chocolate chip pancakes. On the trip across America, the West had the biggest and the best…hands down. But this morning I had pancakes at Three Seasons Diner in Manistique and while I ordered a short stack, one I ate and one may be dinner tonight. Cowboy Cafe in Dubois, Wy you’ve got some competition.

Protective rain gear. When you wear it, it’s almost guaranteed not to rain.

Mark and his Pittsburgh Yourh Leadership Group. The two on the right are co-trip leaders who go to college in Portland, OR and have ridden across the US in 18 days!

More proof that Lake Michigan is an ocean. That’s a sea gull not a lake gull.

Random left over decorations from Halloween or 4th of July or maybe they just keep them out all year and change their costumes.
